Inveraray Jail is a historical experience brought to life. From the moment you walk through
the door, you are free to explore and spend as much or as little time as you wish with our costumed
In the original courtroom take your seat where you can listen to re- enactments of real court cases
taken from the prison records.
In the prisons meet the warders, matron and prisoners who portray real life characters from the
Jail's past. Discover the crimes committed. Hear their stories. Ask them questions. Discover
how they lived both inside and outside of the Jail during the 19th century.
Get locked up, try out the wooden beds and hammocks and sample the punishments on the Crank
Wheel or even the Whipping Table!

Last admission one hour before closing.
Due to the historic nature of the buildings and the number of steps involved, disabled access can be limited.
Wheelchair users are admitted free of charge and are welcome to visit all the ground floor areas.
